#Seattle skyline rainbow gay pride pins plus
Many notable residents came to show their support, as the parade was led by Legislative Councilors Gary Fan, Cyd Ho and openly-gay Raymond Chan plus ex-legislator Tanya Chan. Last year’s parade included 2,500 people, which is wonderful, but nothing compared to the 4,000 this year. What is exciting, I think, is the growth in support this parade saw compared to last year’s (which I did not attend). Even the American-based news report CNN had a local reporter present. It got great media attention as well- I took the metro back to China around 9pm that day and it was already playing on the metro TVs with warm reception. The march was peaceful, and though there was a police presence, the whole event seemed to be problem free. What was exceptionally pleasant was that, as far as I knew/could tell, there was no ongoing counter protest or hate anywhere to be seen. People were smiling, holding hands, kissing, and trying to break every gender norm in the book. Rainbows were ubiquitous- flags, shirts, pins, and signs all donned the iconic symbol. At the front was a giant rainbow flag and a sign with the words “Dare to Love,” this year’s theme. As it turns out, this was Hong Kong’s largest pride parade ever. As it got closer, the details of the parade came into view I saw it was more than 4,000 smiling individuals. As the sun was setting, a giant cloud of rainbows began to emerge in the distance. I decided to pick up the parade from Wan Chai and follow it to the end, at Central.
So heading down to Hong Kong for the Pride Parade was a welcome break from the heteronormativity and rigid gender roles characteristic of China (and granted, the latter is changing)! Signs, displays, exhibitions, and apparel for the pro-LGBTQIA cause are a common sight-which is great! The same is not true for life in China, where I’ve been living the past 4 months.
